When Your Doctor Says Surgery
Hearing that you need spinal surgery can be frightening. Whether it is a discectomy, laminectomy, spinal fusion, or artificial disc replacement, the risks, costs, and recovery time are significant. But what many patients do not realize is that for many disc-related conditions, non-surgical spinal decompression therapy can achieve similar or better results without the risks of surgery.
At Blue Zone Advanced Chiropractic in The Woodlands, we have helped numerous patients avoid spinal surgery through our integrated, conservative treatment approach.
Understanding Spinal Surgery
Spinal surgery involves physically altering the structures of your spine to relieve nerve compression. A discectomy removes a portion of a herniated disc. A laminectomy removes bone to widen the spinal canal. Spinal fusion permanently joins two or more vertebrae together. While these procedures can be life-changing for the right candidate, they come with real risks including general anesthesia complications, infection at the surgical site, nerve damage during the procedure, failed back surgery syndrome affecting up to 40 percent of patients, adjacent segment disease where segments above or below the fusion deteriorate faster, and months of recovery and rehabilitation.
How Spinal Decompression Works Differently
Non-surgical spinal decompression uses a computerized table to create controlled, negative pressure within the spinal discs. This negative pressure draws herniated or bulging disc material back toward the center of the disc while pulling nutrient-rich fluid into the disc to promote healing. There are no incisions, no anesthesia, and no recovery period.
Research has shown that spinal decompression therapy can produce meaningful improvements in disc height, reduce herniations visible on MRI, and provide lasting pain relief for patients with herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and spinal stenosis.
Who Is a Candidate for Non-Surgical Decompression
Not everyone can avoid surgery, and we are transparent about that. Dr. Mariam Mobarak carefully evaluates each patient using X-rays, review of existing MRI imaging, orthopedic testing, and neurological examination to determine whether conservative care is appropriate.
Good candidates for non-surgical decompression include patients with herniated or bulging discs without severe neurological deficit, degenerative disc disease, chronic low back or neck pain from disc-related issues, sciatica that has not responded to other conservative treatments, and patients who want to exhaust conservative options before considering surgery.
The Blue Zone Comprehensive Approach
What gives our patients the best outcomes is that we never rely on decompression alone. We combine it with Gonstead chiropractic adjustments to ensure proper alignment supports the decompression process, shockwave therapy to address surrounding soft tissue problems, dry needling to release protective muscle spasms, and functional medicine to reduce systemic inflammation and support disc healing.
