Chiropractic Care and Your Immune System: What the Research Says

Does chiropractic care boost the immune system? What the research actually says, and everyday habits that support your health.

By Dr. Mariam Mobarak, DC

You may have read that chiropractic adjustments "boost" the immune system. It is a common claim online, so it deserves a straight answer.

What the Research Says

In 2020, chiropractic researchers from around the world reviewed the evidence and found no credible scientific evidence that chiropractic care improves immune function. They published a joint statement asking the profession not to make that claim (Côté et al., 2020). A larger 2021 review of spinal manipulation for conditions outside the muscles and joints reached a similar conclusion (Côté et al., 2021).

We agree with them. Chiropractic care at Blue Zone focuses on the spine, joints and muscles: back pain, neck pain, headaches and the way you move.

Where Chiropractic Care Fits

Pain and stiffness can make it harder to stay active and sleep well, and both matter for your overall health. Our role is helping with the muscle and joint problems that get in the way of an active life.

Everyday Habits That Support Your Health

  • Getting enough sleep, on a regular schedule
  • Moving every day, even if it is a walk
  • Eating mostly vegetables, beans, whole grains and fruit, much like people in Okinawa and Ikaria
  • Staying up to date on the vaccines your doctor recommends
  • Washing your hands and staying home when you are sick
  • Keeping close ties with friends and family

If you get sick often, or you have allergies or an autoimmune condition, your primary care physician is the right first stop.

Common questions

Still unsure? Call us at (281) 688-5580 and we will help.

How does spinal alignment affect the immune system?

There is no good evidence that spinal adjustments change immune function. The nervous system and the immune system do interact, but research has not shown that adjusting the spine strengthens immunity. Chiropractic care is best suited to back pain, neck pain and other muscle and joint problems.

How often should I get adjusted to support my immune health?

Chiropractic adjustments are not a way to support immune health, because the research does not back that use. If you come in for back or neck pain, we go over how often to visit after your exam.

Can chiropractic care help with allergies?

Research does not show that chiropractic care treats allergies. For allergy symptoms, see your physician or an allergist. Neck tension or headaches during allergy season are muscle and joint symptoms we can evaluate.

Is there research supporting chiropractic care for immune function?

Yes, and it does not support the claim. A 2020 statement from chiropractic researchers worldwide found no credible evidence that chiropractic care improves immunity, and a 2021 systematic review of spinal manipulation for conditions outside the muscles and joints reached a similar conclusion (Côté et al., Chiropractic & Manual Therapies).
