Why Children Need Chiropractic Care
Most people associate chiropractic care with adult back pain, but the truth is that spinal health begins at birth. The birthing process itself, whether vaginal or cesarean, places significant mechanical stress on an infant's spine and cranium. As children grow, they experience countless falls, sports impacts, and postural stresses from heavy backpacks and screen time that can create spinal misalignments affecting their development.
At Blue Zone Advanced Chiropractic in The Woodlands, Dr. Mariam Mobarak provides gentle, age-appropriate pediatric chiropractic care for children of all ages, from newborns to teenagers.
Common Childhood Conditions That Respond to Chiropractic
Parents are often surprised to learn how many childhood complaints are connected to spinal dysfunction. Chiropractic care can help with colic and excessive crying in infants, difficulty breastfeeding or latching, recurrent ear infections, sleep difficulties and restlessness, torticollis and asymmetrical head shape, developmental delays and retained primitive reflexes, growing pains, poor posture from screen time and heavy backpacks, sports injuries, and headaches in school-age children.
The nervous system controls and coordinates every system in the body. When spinal misalignments interfere with nerve function, the effects can show up in ways that seem unrelated to the spine.
How Pediatric Adjustments Differ from Adult Care
Pediatric chiropractic adjustments are nothing like what you might imagine. The amount of pressure used on an infant is comparable to the pressure you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. There is no twisting or cracking. For older children and teenagers, techniques are adapted to their size and developmental stage.
Dr. Mariam uses specialized techniques including the Webster Technique and gentle Activator methods that are safe and comfortable for young patients. Many children actually enjoy their adjustments and look forward to their visits.
When to Have Your Child's Spine Checked
We recommend having your child evaluated shortly after birth and then periodically during their first year, which is a critical time for spinal and neurological development. During childhood, three to four checkups per year are ideal, especially after any trauma, during growth spurts, or if the child is frequently ill. Common signs that your child may benefit from chiropractic evaluation include unusual crying patterns, poor appetite, erratic sleeping, ear infections, complaints of pain, or changes in walking patterns.
